The Marco Island Strummers is a band with “four string banjo emphasis" which plays tunes historically associated with the banjo. The band’s repertoire ranges from Stephen Foster compositions through ragtime, riverboat, sing-along, and Dixieland tunes up to the tunes of Tin Pan Alley days, and even includes a few concert band style marches. The band was formed in 1998 by five amateur musicians and now consists of 22 volunteer members, all of retirement age, enjoying the fun of playing and singing the music of the first three decades of the 20th century (as well as the occasional more modern tune). Instrumentation varies depending on the time of the season, but most of the year we have from 4 to 8 banjos, a piano, two saxophones, 1 or 2 trumpets, clarinet, trombone, tuba, and drums. Some characteristics of the band are listed to the right in bold lettering.
